Without any options, <code>say<\/code> will simply speak whatever text you give it out loud.<\/p>\n<pre><code class=\" hljs ruby\"><span class=\"hljs-variable\">$ <\/span>say <span class=\"hljs-string\">\"Never trust a computer you can't lift.\"<\/span>\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>You can also use <code>say<\/code> to speak the contents of a text file with the <code>-f<\/code> flag, and you can store the resulting audio clip with the <code>-o<\/code> flag:<\/p>\n<pre><code class=\" hljs bash\">$ say <span class=\"hljs-operator\">-f<\/span> mynovel.txt -o myaudiobook.aiff\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>The <code>say<\/code> command can be useful in place of console logging or alert sounds in scripts. For instance, you can set up an Automator or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noodlesoft.com\/hazel.php\">Hazel<\/a> script to do batch file processing and then announce the task\u2019s completion with <code>say<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>But the most enjoyable use for <code>say<\/code> is rather more sinister: if you have <code>ssh<\/code> access to a friend or coworker\u2019s Mac, you can silently log into their machine and haunt them through the command line.
