The eyebrows tilt slightly upward. The mouth curves to one side. The eyes narrow just a little. Is that person amused? Sarcastic? Smug?

You have 4 seconds to decide.

Welcome to Emotion Palette — a game that tests how well you really read human emotions.

The Idea

We read faces every day. In conversations, on video calls, across crowded rooms. We think we’re good at it. Most of us aren’t as good as we think.

Emotion Palette puts that skill to the test. A hand-drawn face appears showing a specific emotion. You get 4 seconds and 4 choices. Pick the right emotion. Sounds easy — until the faces start getting subtle.

Is that face happy or just content? Is that expression skeptical or confused? Is that smirk amused or sarcastic?

The game starts with obvious emotions — big smiles, deep frowns, wide-open surprised eyes. But as you progress, the expressions get more nuanced. The differences shrink. The eyebrows shift by just a few degrees. The mouth curve changes by a fraction.

And suddenly, reading emotions isn’t so easy anymore.

How It Works

The Basics

Each round, a face appears inside a circular frame. Below it, four emotion options are displayed as buttons. Tap the correct one before time runs out.

Correct answer: +10 base points, plus a speed bonus and streak multiplier

Wrong answer: Lose a life

Timeout: Lose a life

3 lives total — lose them all and it’s game over

The Difficulty Curve

This is where it gets interesting. The game has three difficulty tiers that unlock as you progress:

Rounds 1-4 — Easy Six basic emotions with exaggerated features:

Happy: Wide smile, raised brows, blushing cheeks

Sad: Deep frown, drooping brows, visible teardrop

Angry: V-shaped brows, gritted teeth, intense eyes

Surprised: Huge eyes, raised brows, open mouth

Disgusted: Squinted eyes, twisted mouth, scrunched face

Fearful: Wide panicked eyes, tiny pupils, sweat drop

These are the training wheels. You’ll get most of these right. You’re supposed to.

Rounds 5-11 — Medium Eight new emotions enter the mix:

Amused — Like happy, but with a slight head-tilt quality and one raised brow

Skeptical — One eyebrow up, one slightly down, mouth flat

Confused — Asymmetric brows going opposite directions, crooked mouth

Smirking — One-sided smile, slightly narrowed eyes

Disappointed — Like sad, but less dramatic — droopy but not crying

Bored — Nearly closed eyes, completely flat mouth

Nervous — Wide-ish eyes, awkward smile, sweat drop

Excited — Like happy and surprised had a baby — huge eyes AND huge smile

This is where most players start losing lives. Amused vs. Happy trips people up. Skeptical vs. Confused is a coin flip for many.

Rounds 12+ — Hard Eight more subtle emotions:

Content — Barely smiling, eyes almost closed, peaceful

Sarcastic — That specific half-smile with one raised brow

Smug — Slightly lowered lids, small self-satisfied smile

Worried — Between nervous and sad, with asymmetric brows

Lonely — Big eyes, small frown — vulnerable, not just sad

Unimpressed — Half-closed eyes, nearly flat mouth

Embarrassed — Wide eyes, tiny pupils, blushing, awkward mouth

Frustrated — Like angry but more “sighing deeply” than “about to yell”

At this level, the game becomes genuinely challenging. The difference between smug and content is a matter of millimeters in eyebrow angle. Sarcastic and smirking share the same half-smile — the distinction is in the eyes.

The Streak System

Consecutive correct answers build a streak. Each streak point adds +5 to your score multiplier. Get 10 in a row and you’re earning 60+ points per correct answer instead of 10.

But one wrong answer resets your streak to zero.

This creates a wonderful tension: you’re confident about the answer, but are you streak-confident? Is it worth risking a 15-streak on a face that might be “amused” or might be “smirking”?

The Faces

Every face in Emotion Palette is drawn in real-time using custom vector graphics. No static images — each face is composed from parameters:

Eyebrow angle and height — The most important emotional signal

Eye openness and pupil size — Wide eyes = surprise/fear, narrow = suspicion/boredom

Mouth curve, width, and openness — Smiles, frowns, gasps, grimaces

Asymmetry — One raised eyebrow, a lopsided smile, a slight skew

Extras — Teardrops, blush marks, sweat drops for emphasis

These parameters are tuned differently for each of the 20 emotions, creating distinct but sometimes similar-looking faces. A small amount of random noise is added each round so you can’t just memorize exact pixel patterns — you have to actually read the expression.

The faces are deliberately stylized, not photorealistic. This is intentional. Research in psychology shows that simplified facial representations actually make emotional reading harder in some ways — you can’t rely on skin texture, wrinkles, or real-world context cues. You have to read pure geometry.

What the Game Teaches

Emotion Palette isn’t just a game — it’s a workout for your emotional intelligence.

Pattern recognition: After a few rounds, you start noticing the patterns. Angry brows go down and in. Sad brows go up and out. Surprised brows go straight up. This pattern recognition transfers to real life.

Asymmetry awareness: Many subtle emotions involve asymmetric faces — one brow up and one down, a lopsided mouth. In real life, asymmetric expressions often signal mixed or complex emotions. The game trains you to notice this.

Speed reading: 4 seconds isn’t much. But in real conversations, you often have even less time to read a facial cue before the expression changes. The time pressure forces you to develop quick, intuitive reading rather than slow, analytical thinking.

Emotional vocabulary: Most people can identify “happy,” “sad,” and “angry.” Fewer can distinguish “disappointed” from “sad” or “amused” from “happy.” The game expands your emotional vocabulary — giving you words for expressions you’ve seen but never named.

Scoring Guide

Score Range

What It Means

Under 100

Still learning the faces

100-300

Good eye — you read the obvious ones well

300-500

Impressive empathy — you catch the subtle ones

500-800

Emotional genius — few can read faces this well

800+

Master empath — are you sure you’re not psychic?

Tips for High Scores

Watch the eyebrows first. They’re the single most expressive feature. The angle and height of the brows alone can distinguish most emotions.

Check for asymmetry. If the face looks different on the left and right sides, it’s probably a complex emotion: skeptical, confused, amused, smirking, or sarcastic.

Look for extras. Teardrops, sweat drops, and blush marks are strong signals. If you see a teardrop, it’s sad. Sweat drop? Fearful or nervous. Blush? Happy or embarrassed.

Build streaks on easy rounds. Don’t rush through the early rounds — use them to build a high streak that earns you massive points when the harder emotions arrive.

When in doubt, check the mouth. Is it symmetric or skewed? Open or closed? Curved up or down? The mouth is your tiebreaker when the eyes and brows are ambiguous.

Built With

Flutter — custom
CustomPainter
for real-time face rendering

20 unique emotions across 3 difficulty tiers

shared_preferences for best score persistence

ChangeNotifier — clean reactive state management

Zero external assets — every face is generated from code

Play It

You think you can read faces? Prove it.

Start with the obvious ones. Build your streak. Then watch as the faces get subtler, the differences shrink, and suddenly you’re staring at a slight half-smile wondering if it’s content, amused, or sarcastic.

4 seconds. 4 choices.
