Decay: How Long Can You Keep the Screen Alive?
It starts with silence. A pristine grid of white cells glowing softly on a dark screen. Everything is clean. Everything is perfect.
Then a single cell turns purple.
Then another. And another.
Welcome to Decay — a game about fighting entropy with your fingertips.
The Concept
Decay is a survival game built on a simple premise: your screen is dying, and only you can save it.
You start with a grid of clean, white cells. A timer starts. Random cells begin to corrupt — turning from white to lavender, then to purple, then to deep dark violet. Dead. Gone.
Your job? Tap the corrupted cells to restore them. Tap fast enough, and the screen stays alive. Miss too many, and the corruption spreads until the system fails.
The twist: it never stops getting harder.
How Corruption Works
Every cell on the grid exists in one of four states:

| Stage 2 | Purple | Getting worse — tap it before it’s too late |
| Stage 3 | Dark Violet | Dead — still tappable, but you’re barely keeping up |
Each tick of the game clock, two things happen:
- Existing corrupted cells advance one stage deeper. Stage 1 becomes Stage 2. Stage 2 becomes Stage 3. Stage 3 stays dead.
- New clean cells get infected. They enter at Stage 1.
When you tap a corrupted cell — any stage — it snaps back to clean instantly. One tap, fully restored.
The catch is the math. Early on, one cell corrupts per tick. You can handle that. But the rate increases:
- 0-10 seconds: 1 cell per tick
- 10-20 seconds: 2 cells per tick
- 20-30 seconds: 3 cells per tick
- 30-45 seconds: 4 cells per tick, ticks get faster
- 45-60 seconds: 5 cells per tick, ticks get even faster
- 60+ seconds: 6 cells per tick at maximum speed
At some point, your fingers simply can’t keep up. That’s when the purity drops, the health bar turns red, and the screen starts to die.
The Purity System
At the top of the screen, a health bar shows your grid’s purity — the percentage of cells that are still clean.
- Above 70%: The bar is green. You’re doing great.
- 50-70%: Yellow. The cracks are showing.
- 35-50%: Orange. The screen pulses with warning.
- Below 35%: Red. The edges flash. You’re losing.
- Below 25%: Game over. System failure.
Watching the purity bar is like watching a patient’s vital signs. It drifts down slowly at first. Then faster. Then you’re frantically tapping purple cells while new ones bloom faster than you can reach them.
The moment you realize you’ve lost — that the decay rate has overtaken your ability to tap — is genuinely tense. Your fingers are moving as fast as they can. The grid is half-purple. The health bar is shrinking. And somewhere in your brain, you’re doing the math: I can’t save this.
That’s Decay.
Why 60 Seconds Feels Like an Achievement
Most players survive 20-40 seconds on their first run. Breaking 60 seconds takes focus, strategy, and fast fingers. Here’s why:
Prioritization matters. Not all corrupted cells are equal. A Stage 1 cell in the corner is less urgent than a Stage 2 cell in the center (because center cells are easier to spot and tap on subsequent rounds). But you have limited taps per second — so you need to prioritize.
Spatial memory helps. After a few rounds, you start to develop awareness of which areas of the grid are “hot” — where corruption tends to cluster. Your eyes learn to scan in patterns.
Rhythm is everything. The best scores come from players who find a tapping rhythm that matches the decay rate. Not frantic — rhythmic. Scan, tap, scan, tap.
The Visual Language
We designed Decay’s visuals to tell you everything without any text during gameplay.
The color gradient from white to dark violet gives you instant readability. A quick glance tells you which cells are fresh infections (light) versus nearly dead (dark). You don’t read — you feel the state of the grid.
The health bar color shift from green through yellow to red is intuitive. You never need to read the percentage number — the color tells you everything.
The warning effects — pulsing borders at 50% purity, red flashes at 35% — create genuine urgency without being annoying. They’re your body’s adrenaline response, translated to pixels.
And the dark background makes the white cells glow. A fully clean grid is beautiful. Watching it fill with purple is visceral. It looks like infection. It looks like something dying.
That’s intentional.

Your best score is saved locally, so you’re always chasing your personal record. There’s no leaderboard, no social pressure — just you versus entropy.
The Philosophy Behind the Game
Decay is a game about an inevitable loss. You cannot win. The corruption will always eventually overwhelm you. The only question is: how long can you hold it back?
There’s something honest about that. Most games let you win. Decay says: “You will lose. Now show me how long you can fight.”
It’s a game about maintenance. About the effort required to keep things working. About the invisible labor of fighting entropy — in software, in life, in systems that are always quietly decaying if nobody tends to them.
